KAREN Right! So … about this love scene …

BEV I looked at those pages in the script one more time, before you guys got here, and I gotta say there’s not that much there—I mean, as described by the six writers. It says: “They melt into bed and become one.”

STEVE … yeah … and …?

BEV So, what’s the big deal? I mean, why’re they suddenly turning this into some … massive … sex scene? I don’t understand.

KAREN … it’s been brewing for a while now …

STEVE Listen, not to be crass, but Karen and I could both use a hit right about now!! I feel like I’m constantly fighting my, you know, my image and yes, I’ve done a little bit of rehab, been arrested a few times … Jesus!! You try living with the pressure, ok?!! You try it!! (Beat.) And Karen, too! It’s not just me! Your last big one since you came out was that Tom Hanks thing …

KAREN I love Tom.

STEVE … and that’s, like, however many years ago. I mean, really. (To BEV and MISSY.) We need this … this is huge for us, and I actually think it’s good for the whole … you know … film. (Beat.) This is new, it’s fresh, it’s edgy … and it really works for my character!

BEV Yeah? Why’s that?

STEVE It’s hard to keep thinking up reasons for me to take my shirt off—getting naked’s a totally organic way for that to happen!

BEV I see.

STEVE I have to keep an eye on the whole thing, the bigger picture—did I tell you that I’m an “exec producer” on this flick?

BEV Yeah, I think you mentioned it. (Beat.) Now, what Karen has told me … at least led me to believe … they’re asking for the two of you to actually have sex. On camera.

KAREN … I mean … they’re … exploring the …

STEVE … yeah, that’s it. More or less.

BEV How much “more” or “less?”

A look between KAREN and STEVE. Finally STEVE blurts out:

STEVE Listen … it’s the Belgian! That little asshole’s the guy who thought this up!

KAREN I’ll second that—he’s the one who came to my trailer and proposed it. I mean, it makes a certain amount of sense, he’s the director … but that’s where the whole …

STEVE Plus he gets a writing credit! Fucker.

KAREN Anyhow … yes. The money people like it, feels it pushes the envelope in a new way that’s inevitable and, and … since Steve and I are pretty much household names … we’ll get a lot of internet buzz and coverage in the legit press as well. So. (Beat.) It’s never been done by Americans before, in a movie backed by the majors.

BEV Yeah, but, I mean … that’s an instant NC-17! I’ve faced this before and the sex wasn’t even real …!!

STEVE That’s all covered! We just suggest it in the domestic prints … the hard stuff will only appear in Europe and, like, select Asian markets. It then comes out
